The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied reports of an alleged agreement with former President Goodluck Jonathan over the 2027 presidential election, insisting that discussions on its presidential ticket are still ongoing.
The party said no decision had been taken on zoning its presidential ticket and dismissed claims that Jonathan had secured any form of understanding with the party ahead of the next general election.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, the Deputy National Spokesman of the NDC, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, described the reports as mere speculation.
According to him, the party is still consulting widely across different political interests and has not concluded talks on who would emerge as its presidential candidate.
“The NDC is a party that believes in merging ideas and consultations across boards,” Abdulsalam said.
“I can categorically tell you that we have not zoned the presidential ticket. Consultations are still ongoing since politics is a dynamic game.”
He explained that the party was currently witnessing growing interest from prominent politicians across the country, including some members of the ruling party.
Abdulsalam disclosed that several former governors, ex-ministers and lawmakers were already making moves toward the party as political alignments ahead of 2027 continue to gather momentum.
“As I speak to you, we are still expecting high-profile personalities, including former governors, ex-ministers, serving and former lawmakers, even from the ruling party,” he stated.
“The NDC is the beautiful bride that everybody wants to have right now.”
The spokesman also reacted to growing rumours linking Jonathan to the party’s presidential ambition, saying there was no official discussion or arrangement involving the former president within the party hierarchy.
“This is another rumour making the rounds that former President Jonathan wants to pitch his tent in our party,” he said.
“There is no concrete move like that in the hierarchy of our party, and such a decision has not been taken.”
Despite dismissing the reports, Abdulsalam admitted that Jonathan remains eligible to contest for the presidency if he decides to return to active politics.
According to him, the former president, like every qualified Nigerian, has the constitutional right to seek elective office on any political platform of his choice.
“But I can tell you that everything is still possible in the case of former President Jonathan,” he added.
“He is a Nigerian who is eminently qualified to fly the flag of the party on any platform of his choice. But as of today, we have no pact with him.”
