According to a report by YEN on Saturday, May 16, 2026, the mother of a 17-year-old final-year student of Asanteman Senior High School has come out to challenge what people have been saying about how her son died.…....
The boy, identified as Harrison, died at their home at Meduma in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region. Early reports said he was electrocuted when lightning struck while he was charging his phone during a rainstorm. But his mother says that is not the truth.
She explained that she closed her shop and came home, only to find her son lying down in a strange position. His hands were clutched together and his mouth was resting on his hands, as if he was praying. She called his name. She touched his head. It fell on his shoulder.
She lifted his head to look at his face and saw tears on his cheeks. She wiped his face, still not realising what had happened. Then she checked further and found his phone lodged inside his throat while it was still connected to power. She hit the phone out of his throat and held him on her lap. His neck had burns on it. It was then she knew her son was gone.
She is questioning the lightning story strongly. She said the phone and the charging socket were not damaged or burnt the way they should be if lightning had struck. She also said her son’s body was still soft, not hard and stiff the way a person’s body becomes after electrocution.
Earlier eyewitness accounts claimed Harrison came home from school, plugged in his phone, and was making a call when lightning struck.
Police have opened an investigation into the matter. The truth of exactly what happened to young Harrison is yet to be fully established.
