The Federal Government of Nigeria has continued its push to end estimated billing through the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), a major initiative supported by the World Bank.
The programme is being implemented by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Under this initiative, the government is providing free prepaid electricity meters and installation to Nigerians across different states.
Have you heard about the free DISREP meters? This is part of a wider effort to ensure that every household and business premises in Nigeria is properly metered.
Electricity distribution companies in key locations have already received a large number of meters for distribution. These include Abuja, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola.
This means many Nigerians now have the opportunity to get metered without paying any fee.
Why the DISREP Meter Matters
For years, many electricity users have complained about estimated billing. With a prepaid meter, you only pay for what you actually consume.
This programme is designed to:
- End estimated billing
- Improve transparency in electricity usage
- Help consumers manage their power consumption better
- Reduce disputes between customers and distribution companies
Key Things to Know About DISREP Meters
- The meter and installation are completely free
- Each meter is linked to a specific Disco (AEDC, BEDC, EEDC, EKEDC, IBEDC, IE, JEDC, KEDC, KEDCO, PHEDC, YEDC)
- Meters are marked with DREP-PP1 LOT numbers for identification
- They are not transferable between distribution companies
- Easy to identify and verify
How to Get Your Free DISREP Meter
The process is simple and direct.
- Visit the nearest electricity distribution company office in your area
- Request for a DISREP prepaid meter
- Provide necessary account or identification details
- Wait for confirmation and installation
There is no need for middlemen or agents.
Do not pay anyone for a DISREP meter or installation. The Federal Government has made it clear that both are free.
If anyone asks you for money, it is likely a scam.
Final Note
This initiative is part of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector aimed at improving service delivery and accountability.
For Nigerians still on estimated billing, this is a clear opportunity to switch to prepaid metering and gain better control over electricity costs.
