“I’ll Go Underground” – Aisha Yesufu Fires Warning Ahead of 2027 FCT Polls

Human rights activist and politician, Aisha Yesufu, has vowed to strongly resist any attempt to manipulate votes in the 2027 Federal Capital Territory senatorial election.

Yesufu made the declaration on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, shortly after confirming her exit from the African Democratic Congress and defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the platform under which she plans to contest for the FCT Senate seat.

Speaking during the interview, the activist said she would not engage in electoral malpractice but warned that anyone planning to tamper with votes cast for her would face stiff resistance.

“I will not do any illegality. I am not going to steal anybody’s vote, but if I am able to clinch my party ticket and we get to the general election, anyone who thinks they will rig the vote that the people have given me, will know that when they go low, I will go underground,” she said.

Yesufu also dismissed suggestions that she could easily be intimidated in the political arena. According to her, she is fully prepared for the realities of Nigerian politics and would not allow herself to be treated as weak.

“Nobody has monopoly of anyhowness. I don’t think I look like someone who is a walk-over to anybody,” she stated.

The activist further expressed confidence in voters within the Federal Capital Territory, describing Abuja residents as politically conscious people who are known for making independent decisions during elections.

“One of the things I also know about the politics of Abuja is, when it comes to the general election, Abuja residents are very, very firm in their decision. And they choose who they want. Nobody has a right to come and impose anybody on Abuja people,” she added.

Yesufu recently announced her intention to contest for the FCT senatorial seat, saying her decision to join active politics is a continuation of the advocacy work she has carried out over the years.

She explained that moving into elective politics would give her the constitutional backing to address major issues affecting residents of the nation’s capital, including insecurity, poor infrastructure, education and the rights of residents.

Her comments have already generated reactions across political circles ahead of the 2027 general elections, with supporters praising her boldness while critics questioned her chances in the highly competitive contest.

Yesufu became widely known during the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and later emerged as one of the prominent voices during the #EndSARS protests. Over the years, she has remained vocal on issues relating to governance, accountability and electoral transparency in Nigeria.
