Tributes, accolades, and glowing commendations have continued to pour in from stakeholders across Nigeria’s media industry as veteran journalist and renowned multimedia broadcaster, Ayaba Omobolanle Esther Akingbehin, formally retires from active service at the News Agency of Nigeria after more than 25 years of meritorious service in journalism and public communication.
Described by colleagues and associates as an accomplished media icon, consummate professional, and inspirational newsroom leader, Akingbehin exits the Agency leaving behind an enduring legacy of excellence, dedication, integrity, and transformative journalism.
In a heartfelt farewell message released on Tuesday, 26 May, 2026, the outgoing DEIC Multimedia, Lagos, reflected on what she described as “a remarkable and unforgettable journey filled with growth, learning, friendship, and impactful service to humanity.”
According to her, NAN represented far more than a workplace, but rather a family and nurturing institution that profoundly shaped both her professional and personal life.
“Though I may be withdrawing my service from the Agency, the love, bond, and relationships built over the years will forever remain with me,” she stated emotionally.
Akingbehin expressed profound gratitude to the management of NAN, editorial leadership, senior colleagues, and members of staff in Lagos and Abuja for their unwavering support, encouragement, and cooperation throughout her distinguished career.
She reserved special appreciation for her Multimedia Team, whom she described as her family for over 17 years, applauding their loyalty, professionalism, teamwork, shared sacrifices, and unforgettable moments that made the journey exceptionally rewarding.
Before joining NAN in 2008, Akingbehin had already carved a niche for herself in Nigerian journalism through the Lagos State Broadcasting Service, where she served as the pioneer Abuja Head of Bureau for Radio Lagos/Eko FM.
Her remarkable journalism career also featured strategic assignments as Capital Market Correspondent, Political Correspondent covering the National Assembly, and State House Correspondent, earning her widespread admiration for professionalism, depth, and excellence in reportage.
At NAN, she further distinguished herself as Health and Labour Correspondent, representing Nigeria at several prestigious international engagements, including conferences organised by the International Labour Organization and the World Health Organization in Geneva.
The veteran journalist also paid glowing tribute to the late Dame Oluremi Oyo, whom she credited with providing the transformative opportunity that launched her successful multimedia journalism career through the establishment of NAN Radio.
Beyond the newsroom, Akingbehin earned widespread recognition for her leadership and advocacy roles within the journalism profession, serving as former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NAN Chapel, immediate past Vice President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, South-West Zone, and former Vice President of the Lagos State University Students’ Union.
An alumna of the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Programme, she noted that journalism had opened doors to immense opportunities, global exposure, and invaluable experiences that continue to shape her journey in public service and strategic communication.
Akingbehin currently serves as Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the APC Chairman in Lagos State, where she continues to contribute her vast media expertise to governance and public engagement.
“As I step into another phase of life, I carry with me cherished memories, invaluable experiences, and deep appreciation for every individual who contributed to my growth and success over the years,” she stated.
She wished NAN and its workforce greater success, progress, and continued excellence, while thanking colleagues, friends, and associates for being part of what she described as an extraordinary and fulfilling professional journey.
