His work involved signing agreements with tenants and collecting rent on behalf of property owners.

In other words, he was a well-known landlord for several apartments within Nairobi.

Moreover, in 2007, he was approached by an elderly woman who was experiencing problems with one of her tenants.

He agreed to represent her and help deal with the rogue tenant who had allegedly refused to pay rent for several months.

According to Kimani, the rent arrears had accumulated to KSh 50,000.

“His name was Rodgers, and he had lived in the house for many years but refused to vacate. He also had rent arrears and was allegedly planning to take over the house since the landlord was very old,” he said.

How did the Nairobi landlord become visually impaired?

Since the woman trusted his work in managing rental apartments, she asked him to speak to the tenant and find a solution.

He noted that, since the monthly rent was KSh 15,000, he drafted an agreement which he presented to Rodgers, stating that he would pay the monthly rent and add an extra amount on top to offset the KSh 50,000 debt.

This arrangement worked as agreed for the first few months, with Kimani confident that everything had been settled.

However, in September 2007, Rodgers insisted that Kimani should pass by the house and collect a cheque for the money instead of sending the usual messengers.

“I didn’t think anything was wrong, so I made my way to his house in the evening. After entering, I first went straight to read the water meter and electricity bill,” he shared.

While at the meter box, he was hit on the head from behind with a metal rod. The only thing he remembers seeing was Rodgers and blood trickling from his head down to his face.

He became unconscious and was rushed to a nearby hospital in Umoja, but was later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital, as he needed surgery.

“I came out of surgery blind. They told me that the trauma on my head interfered with the pressure in my eyes, and everything just switched off,” he said.
