Senator Victor Umeh has shared details of his early impressions of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, revealing how several people who knew Obi personally described him as an extremely prudent and financially disciplined individual before they both became politically aligned.
Umeh made the remarks in a video published by Symfoni TV on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, where he recounted conversations he had with Obi’s former classmates, associates, and longtime acquaintances while trying to understand his personality and leadership style.
According to the senator, he deliberately sought opinions from individuals who had known Obi for many years, including people who attended school with him at Christ the King College and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He explained that he wanted to gather independent assessments about Obi before building a close political relationship with him.
Umeh stated that one observation repeatedly came up during those discussions: many people described Obi as a man who was extremely cautious with money and unwilling to spend recklessly.
Despite the repeated comments, the senator said he did not view Obi’s financial discipline as a negative character trait. Instead, he considered it a reflection of prudence and responsibility, particularly in a political environment where public officials are often accused of wasteful spending.
Recalling the conversations, Umeh said, “One thing that most of them repeated was that Obi was a very frugal, prudent person. ‘Ah, he has money, but you can’t get his money easily unless for a just cause.’ So I said, if that is the only weakness he has, no problem. Let’s go and do it.”
The senator further disclosed that after Obi returned from a trip about two weeks later, he decided to confront him directly with the comments people had made about him.
According to Umeh, he openly informed Obi about the widespread perception that he was “tight-fisted,” a description allegedly shared by several former classmates and associates who knew him during his younger years.
“So when he returned after 2 weeks, I told him that this is what people told me about you, your friends in CKC and those who knew you at University of Nigerian, Nsukka that you are very tight-fisted. Is that the truth?” Umeh stated.
The senator explained that Obi responded calmly to the remarks and defended his approach to handling money, insisting that his cautious spending habits were rooted in discipline rather than selfishness.
According to Umeh, Obi maintained that he worked hard for his wealth and believed strongly in managing resources carefully while avoiding unnecessary expenses.
“He said well, anybody can say anything, that he works for his money and that he uses money very prudently. He has allergy to wasteful spending.”
The comments have since generated reactions among supporters and political observers, many of whom noted that Obi’s reputation for frugality has long been part of public discussions surrounding his political identity.
Over the years, the former governor has frequently been portrayed by supporters as a leader who prioritises cost-cutting, prudent management of public funds, and fiscal discipline. Critics, however, have sometimes interpreted the same trait differently, describing it as excessive caution in spending.
Political analysts say Umeh’s account provides additional insight into Obi’s personal philosophy and the image he cultivated even before gaining national political prominence….See More
