PDP Faction Names Jonathan 2027 Candidate Amid Abuja Venue Shutdown

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki on Saturday declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, despite the sealing of its original convention venue in Abuja by security operatives.

The faction had planned to hold its special national convention at the A-Class Event Centre in Wuse 2, but later relocated to its national secretariat in Area 10, Garki, after the venue was sealed earlier in the day.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan was not present at the event, but his Certificate of Return was received on his behalf by Bayelsa State lawmaker Fred Agbedi.

Addressing party members, Turaki accused unnamed political interests of trying to undermine democracy, insisting that no group could stop the will of the people.

He said the faction remained guided by court judgments and the PDP constitution, adding that INEC had been notified of the meeting.

At the convention, delegates adopted a motion to ratify Jonathan as the faction’s presidential candidate through a voice vote, moved by Edo PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi and seconded by former Minister Mohammed Sanusi Dagash.

However, a rival PDP faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike rejected the exercise, insisting that Sandy Onor remained the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The Wike-aligned group had earlier warned against holding the event, describing it as not recognised by the party’s national leadership.
