According to a report by Vanguard, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a strong political message directed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring that what he described as an era of political complacency and misleading governance narratives is nearing its end as Nigerians become increasingly politically aware.
Atiku made the remarks in a statement released on Friday, May 29, 2026, amid growing political conversations ahead of future elections. The statement, which was signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, addressed the current state of governance and the evolving expectations of Nigerian citizens.
In the message, the former presidential candidate suggested that Nigerians are becoming more conscious of political developments and are gradually preparing to hold leaders accountable through democratic participation at the ballot box.
He argued that the political environment in the country is undergoing a significant shift, driven by increased public engagement and a stronger demand for transparency, performance, and responsibility from those in positions of power.
Atiku maintained that citizens are no longer content with rhetoric or campaign promises alone, insisting that there is now a growing expectation for measurable results in key areas such as economic performance, national security, and social welfare.
According to him, the political space is entering a new phase in which voters are more likely to critically assess leadership based on tangible outcomes rather than political messaging or party loyalty.
He further stated that governance must be rooted in accountability and responsiveness to the needs of the people, warning that any leadership perceived as disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians would face increasing public scrutiny.
The former Vice President also emphasized that the rising political consciousness among citizens reflects a broader transformation in Nigeria’s democratic culture, where electoral participation is becoming more informed and issue-driven.
He noted that Nigerians are closely monitoring the actions of political leaders and will ultimately express their judgment through the democratic process when the time comes.
Atiku stressed that the power of the electorate remains the most effective instrument for shaping the country’s political direction, reinforcing the importance of active civic engagement in sustaining democracy.
He added that this heightened awareness has strengthened the role of citizens in governance discussions and increased pressure on public office holders to deliver meaningful progress.
In the statement, Atiku issued a pointed warning about the current political climate, insisting that the patience of Nigerians should not be underestimated.
“Let no one be deceived,” he said. “The era of complacency is ending. The age of propaganda is drawing to a close. The period of taking Nigerians for granted is fast disappearing. The people are awake, they are watching closely, and when the time comes, they will make their decision through the ballot….See More
