“Where are the men of God?” — Spyro questions silence of religious leaders

Nigerian singer Spyro has sparked widespread reactions after criticizing religious leaders for remaining silent over the country’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

In a viral video shared online, the music star questioned why many churches and mosques were continuing with regular services without addressing recent violent incidents affecting Nigerians.

Spyro said the nation was approaching a dangerous point and called on influential spiritual leaders to speak directly to the government and defend citizens.

Spyro calls out church and muslim leaders

I’ve been asking myself questions: Why am I going to church where another message aside from what is happening in this country is being preached right now?” Spyro said.

Any church or mosque preaching something different from what Nigerians are facing right now is wrong. The country is at the verge of collapse. Someone was beheaded on camera, children have been abducted and nobody knows where they are.”

The singer also mentioned notable Christian leaders including Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo and Pastor Jerry Eze, asking why they had not publicly addressed the current situation. He further challenged Muslim clerics to speak up on national issues affecting citizens.

Reactions trail viral video

The video quickly generated mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians praising Spyro for speaking boldly, while others argued that religious leaders may already be working behind the scenes.

Calls for stronger involvement of faith leaders during national crises are not new in Nigeria.

During the #EndSARS protests in 2020, several religious and public figures were similarly pressured by citizens to openly condemn violence and demand reforms from authorities.
