Adeboye Gives Security Chiefs 90-Day Ultimatum, Demands Action On Terror Sponsors

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Redeemed Christian Church of God), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has urged Nigeria’s security chiefs to eliminate terrorists within 90 days or step down, warning that the country’s worsening insecurity demands urgent and uncompromising action.

Adeboye, in a video message shared via the church’s official X handle on Tuesday, said Nigeria could no longer afford prolonged cycles of violence, kidnappings and mass abductions without decisive consequences for security leadership.

“If I were asked to make suggestions, I would say quietly to our government, move fast. And tell our security chiefs, get rid of these terrorists within 90 days, or resign,” he said.

The cleric stressed that religious leaders can only advise government, insisting that the constitutional responsibility for security rests squarely on the President as Commander-in-Chief.

His comments come amid renewed national concern over rising attacks, including school kidnappings and rural assaults recorded in parts of the country in recent months.

On May 15, gunmen attacked two schools in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, abducting pupils and teachers in an incident that later escalated into public outrage after a teacher was reportedly killed in captivity, with footage circulating online.

Following the incident, President Bola Tinubu directed the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to secure the release of victims.

Adeboye also referenced past efforts by former President Muhammadu Buhari, recalling that during his administration, service chiefs were given deadlines to end Boko Haram insurgency and banditry.

He noted that in 2021, Buhari ordered then security chiefs to take decisive action against bandits, kidnappers and their sponsors, insisting that the military must be proactive rather than reactive.

According to him, while such directives were issued, enforcement weakened once deadlines elapsed.

“I later questioned the former president over why nothing happened after the deadline passed, but I will not go into the details of our conversation,” Adeboye added.

He warned that future directives to security chiefs must go beyond neutralising armed groups to dismantling the networks that sustain them financially and politically.

“When giving orders to the service chiefs this time around, we should make it clear to them that they are not only to eliminate the terrorists, they should eliminate their sponsors, no matter how influential they may be,” he said.

Adeboye’s remarks add to ongoing national debates over the effectiveness of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy as insecurity continues to spread across several regions, with repeated calls for restructuring of security architecture and improved intelligence-driven operations.
