Court Fixes Date To Rule On Fresh Probe In Mohbad’s Death Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled September 29 for judgment in a case demanding a renewed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of late singer, Mohbad.

On Thursday, June 25, Justice James Omotosho announced the date after hearing arguments from Chief Tunde Falola, counsel to the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation.

The foundation had filed the suit, urging the court to order the Nigeria Police Force to reopen its investigation into Mohbad’s passing.

However, the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police all listed as respondents were absent and not represented during the proceedings.

With no counter-arguments presented, Falola adopted all filed processes on behalf of the foundation and asked the court to grant the reliefs being sought.

He argued that the initial police investigation failed to properly address several key issues surrounding the singer’s death.

Speaking after the hearing, Falola maintained that the group remains dissatisfied with earlier findings, insisting that critical questions and leads remain unresolved.

He said: “The circumstances surrounding his death remain mysterious and deserve public attention. As a human rights organisation seeking justice, we believe the police should reopen the investigation.”

According to him, the aim of the suit is to ensure law enforcement authorities conduct a more thorough and transparent review of the case.

The court also heard an application from one Samson Obaboye, who sought to be joined in the suit, stating that he supports calls for accountability and wished to contribute relevant information.

However, Justice Omotosho rejected the request, ruling that Obaboye failed to establish sufficient legal interest to justify joining the case.

This decision means the matter will proceed solely on the main application seeking a fresh investigation.

Meanwhile, Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi Aloba, has reportedly filed a defamation suit against TikToker Oladimeji Hammed, popularly known as Immunizer.

The social media personality had posted videos making allegations about Wunmi amid her ongoing dispute with her father-in-law over the paternity of her son, Liam, including claims that she planned to leave the country during the controversy.
