Motorists and commuters along the busy Onitsha–Owerri Road were left stranded on Friday following severe traffic congestion caused by a damaged section of the highway near the Idemili River axis in Obosi, Anambra State.
The affected stretch, which has been in poor condition for an extended period, has once again disrupted the movement of people and goods, bringing traffic to a near standstill on one of the region’s most important federal road corridors.
Witnesses described the situation as frustrating, noting that what should ordinarily require a quick intervention has turned into another prolonged challenge for road users. The gridlock reportedly stretched for several kilometers, forcing many commuters to spend hours navigating the affected area.
Residents and business owners expressed concern over the recurring deterioration of the road, stressing that the poor condition continues to impact commercial activities, increase transportation costs, and cause unnecessary hardship for travelers.
Many have called on the relevant authorities to urgently address the damaged section and implement long-term maintenance measures to prevent similar disruptions in the future. According to residents, the latest development underscores the need for faster response mechanisms to infrastructure failures across the region.
As public attention turns to officials responsible for road infrastructure within the district, stakeholders are demanding swift action, transparent communication, and sustainable solutions to restore smooth traffic flow and reduce the burden on motorists and residents alike.
The Onitsha–Owerri Road remains a critical route linking major commercial centers in the South-East, making its maintenance essential for economic activities and regional connectivity.
