Friends and family of Chirchir, a driver of the Rembo Classic matatus, have been thrown into mourning after learning that he died after being involved in an accident alongside 27 men and women who were from a parental visit.

The group were part of employees from a company based in EPZ Athi River, and on Sunday, they travelled to a rural village to visit the parents of one of their colleagues; the event was meant to show gratitude, seek blessings from the parents of one of their own and strengthen their social bonds.

According to witnesses, the day was filled with a lot of joy, singing, dancing and gift-giving as the group spent time with the elderly couple, and their videos of the fun times in the event are now emerging.
The victims were part of a chama made up of employees from a company based in EPZ Athi River. On Sunday, the group travelled to a rural village to visit the parents of one of their colleagues in an event meant to show appreciation to the parents and strengthen their social bonds.
How did the Salama accident occur?
According to eyewitnesses, the day was filled with joy, singing, dancing and gift-giving as the group spent time with the elderly couple, with videos of the fun times in the event now emerging.
As reported, tragedy struck at around 8:30pm near the Salama area on Mombasa Road when their minibus was involved in a horrific collision with an oncoming trailer. The trailer crashed head-on into the minibus, killing nine people on the spot, including the driver. Several others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Sultan Hamud Hospital for treatment.

“Pole sana to our brother Chirchir Rembo classic driver from Kembu, who lost his life at Mombasa Road yesterday a few kilometres to Salama town. I was with him at the sherehe in Ukambani around 1 hour before the accident. Pole sana, mkuu,”said Kiptoo the Painter on the Kembu Notice Board on Facebook.
