The victims were identified as Kennedy Muthungu, 29, his brother Stanley Muthungu, 22, and their friend Charles Mutiso, 25.

According to accounts shared by local leaders and relatives, the three were walking home after watching a football match when tragedy struck. Charles is said to have been hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by a businessman in Machakos Town and died at the scene.

Following the accident, Kennedy and Stanley reportedly confronted the driver and attempted to stop him from leaving before police arrived. They allegedly sought accountability for their friend’s death and tried to secure the vehicle keys.

However, the situation reportedly escalated when the driver allegedly raised an alarm, claiming the young men were attempting to steal his vehicle. The claims attracted boda boda riders and members of the public who joined the confrontation.

The crowd allegedly attacked the three men before setting them on fire.

An autopsy later revealed that the victims died from burn injuries and suffocation caused by smoke inhalation.

Police have since launched investigations into the incident after initial reports suggested the trio had been involved in an attempted car theft. Their families have strongly denied the claims, insisting the young men were innocent victims of a misunderstanding.

The suspect linked to the incident has already been presented before the Machakos Law Courts and detained pending investigations.

The deaths have devastated the families. Charles had recently graduated from KCA University and secured a job as a web developer; Kennedy worked in the insurance sector, while Stanley was a Machakos University student awaiting graduation this year.

Relatives are now urging the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to conduct thorough investigations and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
