Nigerian Man Bags 12-Year Jail Term for Stealing ₦64 Million in Lagos

LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, has convicted and sentenced a Nigerian man, Chukwuemeka Udezuka, to 12 years imprisonment for stealing a total sum of ₦64,060,000.

The judgment was delivered on Friday, June 5, 2026, by Justice Rahman Oshodi, who found the defendant guilty of the offence after considering the evidence presented before the court.

According to details made available by the (EFCC), Udezuka was prosecuted for unlawfully taking and converting the sum of ₦64.06 million for personal use, an act that contravenes Nigeria’s criminal laws relating to theft and financial crimes.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence and witnesses to establish the charges against the defendant. The court held that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction.

In his ruling, Justice Oshodi emphasized the seriousness of financial crimes and the need for accountability in both public and private financial transactions. The judge noted that offences involving large sums of money undermine public trust and can have far-reaching economic consequences.

Consequently, the court sentenced Udezuka to 12 years imprisonment, underscoring the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring that individuals found guilty of financial misconduct face appropriate sanctions under the law.

The conviction represents another significant success in the EFCC’s ongoing campaign against corruption, fraud, and other economic crimes across the country. The anti-graft agency has consistently maintained that it will continue to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in financial offences regardless of their status.

Legal analysts say the judgment serves as a strong warning to individuals engaged in fraudulent financial activities, reinforcing the message that economic crimes carry severe legal consequences.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity in Nigeria’s financial system through diligent investigation and prosecution of offenders.

As authorities continue efforts to combat economic and financial crimes, the conviction of Chukwuemeka Udezuka is expected to further strengthen public confidence in the nation’s anti-corruption drive and judicial process.
