NUPRC workers suspend nationwide strike

Normal operations have resumed at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) after workers suspended the one-day warning strike that disrupted administrative activities across the commission’s offices nationwide.

The industrial action, which began on Monday, was called by workers over concerns relating to staff welfare, promotions, training opportunities and institutional governance.

Workers had also demanded a review of the commission’s funding structure, arguing that the current allocation arrangement under the petroleum regulatory framework was affecting the agency’s operational efficiency and financial capacity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NUPRC said the strike was called off following successful negotiations between its management and the in-house unions — the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

According to the commission, the industrial action lasted about 12 hours and affected only administrative operations, while regulatory oversight and oil and gas production activities continued uninterrupted.

The commission dismissed reports suggesting that crude oil production was disrupted by the strike or that the dispute was primarily linked to foreign training opportunities for staff.

Eniola Akinkuotu, NUPRC spokesman said the commission remained committed to improving staff welfare, career development and the overall working environment in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act.

The regulator assured workers that their concerns would be addressed and pledged to prioritise capacity building and professional development across the organisation.
