One dead and another injured after a train and semi-truck collide in Iowa

A train collided with a semi-truck in eastern Iowa on Wednesday, resulting in one fatality and serious injuries to another individual, authorities reported.

The crash took place at a rural crossing where a state highway intersects with the Iowa Interstate Railroad, approximately 70 miles east of Des Moines.

One person in the semi-truck died and another was transported with “serious injuries,” Poweshiek County Sheriff Matt Maschmann confirmed.

Seventeen train cars and two power engines derailed following the impact, causing “significant damage” to the railroad infrastructure. Images from the scene showed a massive heap of railcars with billowing smoke.

Iowa State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Alex Dinkla assured that no hazardous material was spilled.

Crews remain at the scene as they work to clear the wreckage and repair heavily damaged railroad tracks and roadway infrastructure.
