Will All States Get 1,000 Forest Guards Too?, Peter Obi Asks Tinubu

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s reported approval for the recruitment of about 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State, describing the move as reactive rather than strategic.

Obi said while recruiting more security personnel is important, Nigeria’s worsening insecurity requires a more organised, coordinated, and well-thought-out national approach.

According to him, several states including Oyo, Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Borno, Katsina, Anambra, Niger, Imo, and Sokoto are currently facing serious security challenges, raising questions about whether similar approvals will be extended to all states.

He questioned whether every state and the FCT would be allowed to recruit 1,000 forest guards each, amounting to about 37,000 personnel, or whether the decision was simply based on the President’s mood.

Obi also asked what would happen to the Amotekun Corps in Oyo State, noting that the regional security outfit has already been working to secure parts of the South-West.

NDC presidential candidate argued that Nigeria’s insecurity is linked to wider leadership failure, including poor national unity, weak industrialisation, unemployment, and failure to harness the country’s resources in agriculture, minerals, tourism, sports, oil and gas.

He insisted that solving insecurity requires an “ecosystem approach” that addresses leadership, job creation, poverty, youth unemployment, security coordination, and economic productivity together.
