The reception, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, recognised personnel of the Nigeria Police Force Special Intervention Squad (SIS) and the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), whose 56-day operation led to the safe rescue of the victims after nearly two months in captivity.
The event was, however, marked by grief as the Inspector-General paid tribute to Sergeant John Jerome Abena of the FID-IRT, who was killed in the line of duty during the rescue mission.
Disu described the late officer as a courageous and selfless patriot whose sacrifice reflected the highest ideals of service to the nation.

He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to provide the necessary support and welfare, stressing that the fallen officer’s sacrifice would never be forgotten.
Addressing the rescue team, the IGP commended the operatives for their courage, professionalism and patriotism, noting that the successful operation demonstrated the growing effectiveness of the Force’s intelligence-led policing strategy in tackling violent crime and protecting lives.
He also acknowledged the collaboration between the police and other security agencies, describing the joint effort as instrumental to the success of the rescue operation.
Disu disclosed that although the rescued teachers and pupils were not present at the reception, they are currently receiving medical attention and psychological support to aid their recovery from the traumatic experience.
The Inspector-General reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare, motivation and recognition of police personnel, particularly those involved in high-risk operations.
According to him, honouring officers who make extraordinary sacrifices in the line of duty remains a moral responsibility of the Force.
“A policeman is first of all a human being,” the IGP said, underscoring the need to prioritise the welfare of officers and their families.
He further urged officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to remain vigilant, committed and unwavering in the fight against criminality across the country.
Disu reiterated the Force’s resolve to continue protecting lives and property while strengthening operational capacity and ensuring the welfare of personnel nationwide.
