Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos pushed to leave Chelsea because he believed his chances of regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge had become increasingly limited, leading to his £50 million move to Manchester United.
According to the Daily Mail, Santos decided to seek a transfer after assessing Chelsea’s midfield options and concluding that consistent playing time would be difficult to secure.
Crowded midfield influenced decision
Chelsea’s midfield competition intensified after Moises Caicedo signed a new contract, while the club remained determined to keep Enzo Fernandez, reportedly valuing the Argentina international at £120 million.
Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo also provided additional competition for places, leaving Santos facing an uncertain role.
The absence of European football next season further reduced the number of matches available for squad rotation, prompting the 22-year-old to instruct his representatives to find him a new club.
Manchester United subsequently completed a deal worth an initial £48 million, with a further £2 million in potential add-ons.
Limited opportunities at Chelsea
Santos struggled to establish himself as a regular starter during his time at Chelsea despite showing flashes of his potential.
He was criticised after an error during a Premier League defeat to Brighton, with the mistake contributing to Trevoh Chalobah’s red card as Chelsea lost 3-1.
Former manager Enzo Maresca substituted Santos at half-time during another league match against Nottingham Forest and later restricted his appearances mainly to domestic cup and European fixtures.
The Brazilian initially appeared set for a fresh start under Liam Rosenior after the managerial change, but his first-team opportunities again became limited as the season progressed.
Manchester United believe Santos has the quality to develop into a key midfielder and view the signing as a long-term investment rather than an immediate finished product.
The Brazil international will now attempt to establish himself under Michael Carrick as United continue rebuilding their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
