Former investment banker Olufunso Adesina Doherty, popularly known as Funso Doherty, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Doherty made the announcement on Saturday at a well-attended gathering at Freedom Park, Lagos Island. He promised people-centred leadership, improved public services, and an end to inequality.
“With all humility, I would like to announce my candidacy to be the next governor of Lagos State,” he said.
The aspirant, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), criticised the ruling APC for failing to translate the state’s vast resources into real benefits for residents.
He highlighted persistent problems in housing, transportation, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.“Lagos is blessed with enormous potential, yet many residents still struggle to access basic services.
The system must be redesigned to serve the many, not the privileged few,” Doherty stated.
He attributed his passion for public service to his Lagos upbringing, where his parents worked in public institutions and he attended public schools during a time of better opportunities.
Doherty outlined his priorities as:
Massive investment in quality education and technical training
Affordable mass transit and large-scale housing
Reliable water and power supply
Transparent, corruption-free governance
He described education reform as the foundation of his planned administration.
Doherty explained his move to the ADC as part of a broader effort to build a united opposition front.“ADC has become the platform where the opposition has chosen to come together… to offer an alternative from a position of strength,” he said.
His entry into the race sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 governorship battle in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
