US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire with Iran was still in effect after an exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz, and he called the retaliation a ‘love tap.’

“It’s just a love tap,” Trump told ABC News when asked about the strikes. Asked whether the ceasefire was over, he replied, “No, no, the ceasefire is going. It’s in effect.”

Trump said Iran had “trifled with us today” and warned of harsher action if negotiations fail. “We blew them away,” he added. “If there’s no ceasefire, you’ll see one big glow coming out of Iran. They better sign an agreement fast.”
In a social media post, Trump said three US destroyers passed through the Strait of Hormuz “under fire,” adding that missiles and drones launched by Iran were intercepted without damage to US ships.

“A normal Country would have allowed these Destroyers to pass, but Iran is not a normal Country,” Trump wrote. “Just like we knocked them out again today, we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!”

US Central Command said American forces carried out “self-defense” strikes after Iranian forces fired missiles, drones and deployed small boats against the USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta and USS Mason as they transited the strait into the Gulf of Oman.

CENTCOM said no US assets were hit and that American forces struck Iranian missile and drone launch sites, command centres, and surveillance nodes.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps gave a conflicting account, claiming it targeted US warships in retaliation for earlier US strikes on an Iranian oil tanker and coastal civilian areas. The IRGC said the warships suffered “substantial damage,” a claim disputed by CENTCOM.

Trump said negotiations with Iran could still produce an agreement. “It could happen any day, and it might not happen,” he said. “I believe they want the deal more than I do.”

Asked whether Iran had accepted a US proposal, Trump said the offer required Tehran to forgo nuclear weapons. “When they agree, it doesn’t mean much because the next day they forget they agreed,” he said.
