Presidential spokesperson Daniel Bwala has reacted to comments made by former Labour Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo against supporters of Peter Obi, popularly known as “Obidients.”
Okonkwo had made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today on Thursday while discussing Obi’s political future ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
During the interview, Okonkwo claimed Obi would struggle to win the next election, insisting that even people from the South-East region may not support him. He also criticised Obi’s move from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging that the former Anambra governor was avoiding competition in the ADC presidential primary.
Reacting to the development, Bwala expressed surprise that Okonkwo, who actively campaigned alongside Obi and his supporters during the 2023 election, was now criticising the same movement.
“Ken Okwuonkwo classified Peter Obi’s followers otherwise known as ‘Obidients’ as ‘TOXIC’ and ‘STREET URCHINS,’ wow wow,” Bwala wrote on social media.
“This is blockbuster because he was happy to lead them in 2023. There is a new synonym for Obidient; ‘street urchins,’” he added.
Okonkwo’s comments have sparked reactions online, especially among Obi’s supporters, many of whom accused the former Labour Party chieftain of turning against the movement he once championed during the 2023 presidential campaign.
The actor-turned-politician was one of the prominent voices in Obi’s presidential bid and frequently defended the former governor on television and social media during the last election cycle.
