A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, has reaffirmed his total commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that he would rather step aside than defect to another political platform.
The Nollywood actor-turned-politician made the remark while responding to calls from supporters and political observers urging him to consider switching parties amid evolving political dynamics.
Elliot, in an emotional tone, credited his political rise to the influence and support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he referred to as “Daddy.”
> “So many people have called and said, ‘Hey, go to another party.’ I said, ‘Go to another party? How? Daddy picked me from nowhere. If the party says, ‘Desmond, you have done well, go and sit down,’ I will sit down and support whoever the party picks,” he said.
Loyalty Above Defection
Elliot’s statement comes at a time when political realignments and defections are gradually gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, the lawmaker made it clear that his political future remains tied to the APC, regardless of personal ambitions.
Observers say his remarks reinforce a long-standing culture within Nigerian politics, where loyalty to party leadership—particularly influential figures like Bola Ahmed Tinubu—often plays a decisive role in political survival and advancement.
Signal to Party Leadership
Political analysts interpret Elliot’s comments as a strategic signal to APC leadership in Lagos and at the national level, portraying himself as a dependable party loyalist amid potential intra-party competition.
In Lagos politics, where party structure and hierarchy remain dominant, such declarations are often seen as a means of consolidating trust and maintaining relevance within the system.
Ahead of 2027
As permutations quietly begin ahead of the next election cycle, Elliot’s position suggests a willingness to align with party decisions, even if it means relinquishing his seat.
While critics may view the statement as an endorsement of patronage politics, supporters argue it reflects discipline and respect for party supremacy.
For now, Desmond Elliot has drawn a clear line: his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress remains non-negotiable.
