Fear in Northern Nigeria as Gunmen Attack Katsina Grain Market

A tragic attack on Sunday, May 17, 2026, has left at least ten people dead, including a pregnant woman, after suspected armed bandits stormed a grain market in Guga village, located in Bakori Local Government Area.

The assault reportedly occurred during peak market activities when traders and residents were gathered to buy and sell farm produce. Eyewitnesses said the attackers invaded the market and opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic as people ran in different directions for safety.

During the chaos, a pregnant woman and nine other individuals were confirmed dead. Several others were said to have sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for urgent treatment. The exact number of injured persons has not yet been officially confirmed.

The incident took place in Guga village, an area within Katsina State that has repeatedly experienced violent attacks linked to armed groups commonly referred to as bandits. These attacks often target rural communities, markets, and transportation routes, worsening the security situation in the region.

Following the attack, residents were thrown into mourning, with many families reportedly losing loved ones and sources of livelihood. The grain market, which serves as a major trading point for surrounding communities, was immediately shut down as fear spread across the area.

Security operatives have since been deployed to the community to restore order and begin investigations into the incident. Authorities are also expected to intensify efforts to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks in the region.

As of the time of filing this report, official statements from state authorities and security agencies are still being awaited.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity in northern Nigeria, where rural communities continue to suffer repeated assaults despite ongoing military operations.
