Public Affairs Analyst Yusuf Haroun has criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan over what he described as a failure to honour an earlier pledge to serve only one term as Nigeria’s leader.…....
Haroun made the statement during an appearance on TVC News while reflecting on past political developments in the country and the role campaign promises play in shaping public trust. According to him, Jonathan had openly declared on national television that he and his vice president at the time, Namadi Sambo, would not seek more than a single term in office.
“On National TV, Jonathan said ‘myself and Sambo will only run for one term’ later when sweetness of power came, he didn’t fulfill promise,” Haroun stated during the interview.
The public affairs commentator said the former president’s eventual decision to contest for another term became controversial and sparked dissatisfaction in several political circles. He explained that many Nigerians and party stakeholders believed the promise was tied to maintaining political understanding and balance within the country’s power-sharing arrangement.
Haroun argued that Jonathan’s decision to run again altered the political atmosphere ahead of the 2015 general election and contributed to growing opposition against his administration. According to him, some politicians who had initially supported Jonathan felt disappointed after the alleged agreement was not kept.
