A fierce political showdown is unfolding within the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as popular Nollywood actor-turned-lawmaker, Desmond Elliot, insists on pursuing a fourth-term bid despite mounting pressure and internal party tensions.…....
The political drama intensified after Barrister Barakat Odunuga officially declared her intention to challenge the incumbent lawmaker for the APC ticket in Surulere Constituency I ahead of the next round of legislative primaries.
Odunuga said her decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders, stakeholders and grassroots supporters across the constituency. According to her, several aspirants who initially showed interest in the race have now stepped down in her favor.
“The people of Surulere said they want me to contest again,” she declared, referencing her earlier attempt in the 2023 elections where she lost to Elliot.
She alleged that political maneuvering characterized the build-up to the current contest, but maintained confidence in her support base and political structure.
However, Elliot appears unwilling to surrender ground. Speaking during a gathering of loyalists and supporters, the three-term lawmaker emotionally defended his political record, saying the overwhelming support he continues to receive proves that his constituents still believe in his leadership.
“To have this massive number of people say they still want this boy speaks volumes,” Elliot stated.
The lawmaker also publicly appealed for reconciliation with his political godfather following reports linking him to an alleged impeachment plot involving the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly — claims that reportedly almost cost him his influence within powerful political circles.
Despite the controversy, Elliot stressed that leadership is fundamentally about sincerity and service to the people.
“When you open your heart to the people, the people accept you,” he said.
Political observers say the unfolding contest may become one of the fiercest APC primary battles in Lagos this election cycle, particularly because of the growing cracks within local party structures.
The ruling APC is currently facing intense internal competition across several states as party members scramble for tickets ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts predict that many of these primaries could eventually end up in court due to disputes over zoning arrangements and candidate selection processes.
For Surulere Constituency I, however, the battle appears deeply personal and politically symbolic — a test of whether Elliot’s long-standing political influence can survive rising resistance from within his own party. With party primaries drawing closer, all eyes are now on Lagos as supporters of both camps prepare for a potentially explosive political showdown.
