Fresh out of medical school and still adapting to the realities of hospital life, he was unprepared for the tragedy that arrived shortly after midnight.
A serious road accident had claimed the lives of a young couple before they reached the hospital.
Among the victims was their three-year-old daughter, Avery, who survived but was left orphaned.
“She was searching the room with terrified eyes, looking for something familiar in a world that had just shattered,” he recalled.
Although he was not assigned to care for the child, Avery immediately attached herself to him. When staff attempted to move her to another room, she reportedly clung tightly to his arm and begged him not to leave.
“I’m Avery. I’m scared. Please don’t leave me and go,” she repeatedly whispered.
The young doctor stayed by her side, bringing her juice, reading stories and offering comfort as she struggled to process the devastating loss of her parents.
The following morning, social workers arrived to begin arrangements for temporary foster care. As plans were made to place her with foster carers, the doctor found himself unable to walk away.

“I just couldn’t watch a little girl who’d already lost everything get carried away by more strangers,” he explained.
Despite being single, working long shifts, and only recently starting his career, he asked social services whether he could care for Avery temporarily while a long-term solution was sought.
What began as a single night soon evolved into weeks and then months of background checks, parenting classes, home inspections and legal processes.
One of the most memorable moments came during a routine shopping trip when Avery called him ‘Daddy.’
“She asked if we could get the one with the dinosaurs, then immediately froze as if she’d said something wrong,” he recalled.
Instead, he reassured her that she could call him that if she wanted. The moment became a turning point in their relationship.
Six months later, the adoption was finalised, officially making them father and daughter.
He described the years that followed as filled with the ordinary but meaningful moments of parenthood: late-night meals, comforting nightmares, school activities and countless memories shared.
