Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the welfare of judicial officers as a strategic investment in the rule of law, emphasizing that strengthening the judiciary remains essential to sustaining democracy, justice, and good governance in Nigeria.
The President made the statement during the commissioning of a newly completed 10-unit Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters in the Katampe District of Abuja. Represented by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Tinubu said the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the working and living conditions of judicial officers across the country.
According to the President, a strong and independent judiciary requires more than qualified judges and sound legal frameworks. He noted that adequate welfare packages, secure accommodation, and conducive working environments are critical factors that enable judicial officers to carry out their constitutional responsibilities effectively and without undue influence.
Tinubu stressed that investment in judicial infrastructure should not be viewed as a privilege for judges but as a necessary component of nation-building. He explained that the provision of modern housing for judicial officers would enhance their efficiency, independence, and overall well-being, thereby strengthening public confidence in the justice system.
“The welfare of judicial officers is a strategic investment in the rule of law. When judges are provided with secure accommodation and conducive environments, the entire nation benefits,” the President stated.
He further disclosed that the newly commissioned housing project forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to modernize judicial infrastructure and support the administration of justice in Nigeria. The President revealed that additional facilities for other courts and judicial institutions are planned within the area, which he said could evolve into a major judicial district in the Federal Capital Territory.
Tinubu commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for overseeing the successful execution of the project. He also called on state governments to prioritize investments in judicial infrastructure and welfare programs to strengthen the justice sector at all levels.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the intervention. She noted that secure and decent accommodation would improve the welfare of judges and contribute to a more efficient and independent judiciary.
Justice Dongban-Mensem described the project as a significant step toward enhancing the administration of justice and ensuring that judicial officers operate in an environment that supports professionalism and integrity.
