A strong wave of political alignment is sweeping through Nigeria’s House of Representatives as 61 out of 81 opposition lawmakers have officially nominated Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere as the next Minority Leader.
The development follows the defection of former Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), creates a leadership vacuum within the opposition ranks.
Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State and currently serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), has now emerged as the leading candidate with overwhelming backing across party lines.
The endorsement, conveyed in a formal letter to the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas reflects rare unity among opposition lawmakers. Signatories to the nomination span multiple parties, including the NNPP, ADC, APGA, Labour Party, PRP, APP, APM, SDP, and Accord Party
This coalition underscores a strategic effort by the opposition bloc to consolidate leadership and present a coordinated front in the Green Chamber.
Despite the strong backing, there are indications of resistance from a smaller group of lawmakers reportedly pushing for Hon. Frederick Agbedi of Bayelsa State.
The dissenting voices cite concerns over party representation highlighting Ugochinyere’s affiliation with the Action Peoples Party (APP), a minor party in the House as well as zoning considerations, arguing that the position should remain in the South-South region where the outgoing leader hails from.
Attention now turns to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, whose formal recognition is required to ratify the nomination.
If confirmed, Ugochinyere’s emergence could mark a defining moment for opposition politics in the House signalling renewed cohesion, strategic alignment, and a potential shift in legislative engagement.
As consultations continue behind the scenes, the coming days are expected to shape the final outcome of what is fast becoming a pivotal leadership contest within Nigeria’s lower legislative chamber.
