Social media commentator Klintoncod has weighed in on the ongoing “Olodo Uprising” debate sparked by Nigerian rapper Ycee’s criticism of what he described as the growing celebration of anti-intellectualism online.
Reacting to the controversy, Klintoncod argued that the standard of education in Nigeria has declined over the years, pointing to changes in JAMB cut-off marks as an example. According to him, keeping young people engaged in education is crucial for the country’s future.
“When I wrote JAMB, the cut-off mark was 250. Now it’s 150, the standard of education keeps going down. If we don’t keep young people engaged in universities, this country will burn.”
He further claimed that Ycee and several other intelligent musicians rarely release music because they understand that many people no longer appreciate lyrical or intellectually driven songs.
“Ycee, alongside other intelligent legends, hardly releases music anymore because they understand we now have a lot of unintelligent people in society. Many of them won’t appreciate such music and would rather listen to songs that match their level of understanding.”
Klintoncod clarified that he was not calling artists who make mainstream songs unintelligent, but rather suggesting that many simply create content that aligns with what today’s audience prefers.
“I’m not saying those making such songs are not intelligent. I’m simply saying they understand the society we live in.”
